Our FAQ

What is BPS' business?

BPS’ business is to provide technology platforms that drive customers to merchants. BPS achieves this through its trading, payments, deals and rewards platforms operated by its subsidiaries Entertainment Publications, Bartercard, Bucqi and TESS.

What is the BPS revenue model?

BPS has a network of 36 000 merchants, 18 000 Not for Profit groups and 600,000 paying consumers. Revenues are generated from monthly and transactional fees to merchants as well as sales of the Entertainment Publications to loyal consumers via the Not for Profit groups.

Is BPS profitable?

Yes, BPS made a profit after tax of $7.3 million for FY16 and is forecasted to make a profit after tax of $10 million for FY17.

How will BPS grow?

The key areas of growth identified over the next few years will be the accelerated digitisation of the Entertainment Book, expansion of the Bartercard network especially in the USA and Europe, reaping of synergies and cross-selling opportunities between Entertainment and Bartercard in Australia and New Zealand, the bucqi platform roll-out and strategic M&A activity.

What is the Bartercard Platform?

The Bartercard platform facilitates member businesses to trade their goods and services with each other in exchange for market value measured as digital trade dollars. A digital trade dollar has the same face value and purchasing power as an ordinary dollar currency. For tax and accounting purposes it is treated in all aspects as an ordinary dollar.

All trade dollars are supported by the underlying value of the goods or services which are traded. Trade dollars stored within a member’s account can only be paid or redeemed by trading within the Trade Exchange Platform.

Why do merchants trade on the Bartercard Platform?

Merchants use the Bartercard platform to sell additional goods or services, without having to heavily discount, to other members in the network in exchange for trade dollars. These trade dollars are then used to purchase goods or services from other members in the network rather than paying cash. This helps preserve the cash reserves. The merchant has therefore earned value which it otherwise would not have received, and utilized that value to purchase goods and services.

Historically, Bartercard members sell approximately 5% of their annual sales in trade dollars.

Trading on the Bartercard platform is often preferable to alternatives like leaving restaurant tables or hotel rooms empty, mass discounting or dumping, as margins are maintained and core sales channels are not polluted.

How does Entertainment Publications distribute?

Over twenty years ago Entertainment Publications established a unique distribution model with Not for Profit groups and organizations “Groups”. These Groups range from schools and sporting clubs to the largest charities in Australia and New Zealand. This model has been refined over the years and now includes over 18 000 Groups distributing almost 600,000 publications annually to their loyal supporters.

The Entertainment Publication is offered in digital or book format at the election of the purchaser. There is a growing trend towards digital. The Groups receive a significant portion of the proceeds which has been tens of millions of dollars going towards exceptional charitable services.

What is the bucqi roadmap?

After being developed, refined and market tested over the past two years, bucqi is ready to go to consumers during 2017. This will be achieved by execution of the merchant and consumer roadmaps.

The merchant acquisition roadmap is to continue installing the existing Bartercard merchant base across Australia and New Zealand, adding all new merchants that join on a monthly basis, introducing bucqi to the appropriate Entertainment Publication merchants, and continue to bring on large shopping malls with our unique bucqi loyalty and payments program that attracts shoppers to their merchants.

The consumer roadmap is to work with large consumer groups and their custodians or governing bodies to create white-label bespoke loyalty and payments programs for them. The Entertainment Publications’ 18 000 Groups, Bartercard’s many sporting clubs, the salary packaging industry, as well as the large shopping malls and their shoppers are early priorities.
